The Moods I'm In

The Moods I'm In - Preview

Who’s to Say? is a song celebrating humanity. The lyrics are filled with hope that we can accept each other’s different beliefs, and celebrate and learn from our differences rather than letting them come between us.

The Moods Im In is the forth release by Australia Folk Singer Songwriter Jane Laws. It was released in November 2004. This eclectic mix contains sixteen tracks of original music written by Jane.

The tracks are varied, with folk, jazz and country influences, although if you were looking for the genre you would say this was a contemporary folk album. There are some politically influenced, deep and meaningful, melancholy and, just to mix it up, romantic love songs.

Jane was lucky to team up with guitar wizz Mike Alexander on four of the tracks. His accompaniment took some delightful songs to a whole new level. After the release of The Moods Im In, Jane and Mike teamed up to form a new acoustic duo, No Drama.

Reviews

Erik Kowarski - Pocket Universe - March 2005

I really like it! The songs are more diverse- some nice soft jazzy/ bluesy numbers that really suit your voice, especially Another night with You and A Phone Call Away (my two favourites), as well as some of your more ballady numbers. The instrumentation also helps- I'm not big on drum machines in general, but you use it fairly discreetly and it does add character, especially the Latin feel on Another night with You. Your friends have added some nice lines as well- the keyboard on A Phone Call Away, nice mandolin on Mockingbird and some tasty guitar an some of the other tracks. Speaking of guitar, nice to hear you do some strumming, e.g. on Spin the Wheel (nice harmonica, too) and Litigation Blues- that one's got a nice Folk Revival sound to it, helped by the harmonies, which make it quite a strong song. All in all, a great job. It's a good mix of different styles and feels. You've gone outside the box to deliver this one!

Town Crier (West Aust Folk Federation) - February 2005 - Rob Oates

This is the third offering on CD from Jane. The music on this CD has a bit more to it than the first with extra instrumentation and cleaner sound production. When I reviewed "Gypsy Traveller" I made comment of the need for more light and shade and variety and on this album Jane has provided. Styles include jazz influence on "A Phone Call Away", country feels on "Nashville", bit more rocky on "Litigation Blues", bluesy on "Another Night With You" and "It's Alright". It is still quite laid back which suits Jane's voice but it is much easier to listen to and keeps the attention. The content is quite varied with social comment and personal insight and reflections. Overall This is a pleasant easy to listen to selection of songs written and performed by Jane with just a bit of assistance on extra instrumentation.

Track Information and Lyrics

Who's To Say
The opening track is one of peace and tolerance. It was inspired by the aftermath of 9/11.

Who's To Say

There's a guy across the street
We smile every time we meet, he doesn't think like me.
And so we tread cautiously but when I see him with his family
You know he loves like I do, cares like I do, hurts like I do,
He's just like me and you.

Chorus
Who's to say which way's right and which way's wrong?
Who's to say we should go on fighting for so long?
Embrace today, learn today, celebrate this day,
Our lives and all our different ways.
For who's to say? Yes who's to say?

And when the great games come
We join together as if we are one.
And for a time we see the world as it might be if there were harmony.
You know he runs like I do, wins like I do, bleeds like I do,
He's just like me and you.

Chorus

From today lets all join hands
And turn a round our troubled lands let our prejudice go.
For our differences can help us grow
So much to share, so much to learn, so much to know.
You know he laughs like I do, crys like I do, dies like I do,
He's just like me and you.

Who's to say which way's right and which way's wrong?
Who's to say? Who's to say?

Running
Ever felt like running away?

Running

In my mind I am on trial
There's no reprieve, no denial.
Although I try I can't let go.
Do what I can, what I know.
Running from this place where my backs against the wall.
Running for my life I'm praying to god and I'm saying 'please don't let me fall'.

Packed my bags and left same day.
Had no place to go, knew I couldn't stay.
Seems no way in and no way out
No one hears me scream, no one hears me shout.
Running from this place where we listen but don't hear.
Running for my life I'm praying to god and I'm saying 'please remove the fear'.

I rest my head in my hands.
No one dares to ask, no one understands.
Dammed if I do or if I don't.
Dammed if I will or if I won't.
Running from this place that has brought me to my knees.
Running for my life I'm praying to god and I'm saying 'please set me free'.

From the outside looking in
It's not all as it seems, the pain the suffering the sin.
If I should quit while I'm ahead
They turn and say 'you should have said'.
Running from this place where I'm worth more dead than alive.
Running for my life I'm praying to god and I'm saying 'please help me survive'.

Life
Reflective song about those who don't have it as good as most of the Western World.

Life

I was walking through a market
In some far and distant land,
With a fistful of dollars
And my suitcase in my hand.
He shouted 'Madam buy my leathers,
Or how about this lace'.
He had worked from dawn to dusk
And there was sorrow in his face.

Chorus
I was born in this lucky country
This land I call my own,
Full of opportunity
Where we are free to roam.
Where there is music and there is laughter,
Food on our table ever after.
I am one of the lucky few
Who can call this land my home.

That night I wandered out
And found him living in a car,
He was singing for his supper
On a single stringed guitar.
In the middle of that city
You find the young girls dressed up pretty.
They're working the streets
They're in the night clubs and the bars.

Chorus

I threw him a dollar
And he smiled and said 'Some day
That I will take a wife when I find a job
that gives more pay'.
There was hope in his eyes
I just smiled and walked away.
He made me feel uneasy
There was nothing I could say.

Chorus

Spin the Wheel
Jane teamed up with award winning songwriter Sonny Rolfe for this one. Sonny also does a masterful job on the harp.

Spin the Wheel

Do you remember when I was just a kid?
And do you remember that walk we so often did?
It seemed a long way down that old dirt track,
If we hadn't gotten hungry I'm not sure we would have bothered turning back.
If I close my eyes I'm standing there on that old bridge,
And the waters running fast and we're still making boats out of leaves and twigs.
Will you take me back down that old dirt track,
Till it just don't matter anymore?

Do you remember the look in Rusty's eyes?
And do you remember him sleeping at my side?
There to guard me, shadow of my life,
He found me when I ran away, did his best to keep me out of strife.
If I close my eyes he's looking for the very last time,
And he lies down to sleep, Rusty's gone forever, he's no longer mine.
Please let time heal, spin the wheel,
Till it just don't matter anymore.

Do you remember policeman at the door?
And do you remember mama crying 'what cha do that for'?
Bushfire goes racing, there's only me to blame,
How easy trouble finds you when you're dreaming, make believe, playing games.
If I close my eyes I'm running away from my own flames,
Through the tears I hear the rescue and papa keeps on calling out my name.
Help me feel the beat, stay away from the heat
Till it just don't matter anymore.

A Phone Call Away
A great love song with Jazz overtones.

A Phone Call Away

I have fallen for you,
Although you never asked me to.
I just looked out and wished on the nearest twinkling star
That we, together, near or far.
So don't be afraid,
You might have lost but now you've gained.
Come fly with me today
Or take your time, cos I'm just a phone call away.
I'm just a phone call away.

I am taken by you,
Although you never asked me to.
I can feel it in your heart and see it in your smile
That we, together, for awhile.
So don't hesitate,
Take a little chance, I won't be late.
Come fly with me today
Or take your time, cos I'm just a phone call away.
I'm just a phone call away.

I'm in love with you,
Although you never asked me to.
I can tell you honestly I've fallen for your charms,
That we, together, can do no harm
So don't live regret,
If not to be we can forget.
Come fly with me today
Or take your time, cos I'm just a phone call away.
I'm just a phone call away.

The House
An errie folk song, about a haunted house.

The House

There's a house on the top of the hill,
And when the wind is standing still
You can hear a creak or a groan,
Perhaps a voice you once have known.

Chorus
And you may ask would I dare go in?
No, no one dares go in.

There's a black bird, sat in a tree,
He never sings out cheerfully.
He just sits with a distant stare
Just to warn you that he's there.

Chorus

Late at night when all the lights are out,
Don't be afraid if you hear a shout.
Just bolt your doors, don't go outside,
For they sleep by day and they live by night.

Chorus

A story is told of the house on the hill
So listen carefully, I'm sure you will.
Tis those who live there, this town once knew,
And one day will be me and you!

Nashville
Country influenced piece about making it good in the home of country music.

Nashville

Should I take a chance and head on down to Nashville?
Should I stay right here at home where I belong?
Should I take my old guitar and head for Nashville,
Down to Nashville to play them my songs?

There will be no more wondering, no more maybe's after Nashville,
No more dreaming of how things might have been.
I know the truth can hurt but I have to go and find it,
I'm going to Nashville to see if I belong.

Its all late night cafe's and drinking here in Nashville,
Too much hoping in a place I don't belong.
Can't find my writers pen or friends to listen here in Nashville,
Here in Nashville no one listens to my songs.

Now my lesson's learned and my heart's broken here in Nashville,
And the letters you write me make me cry.
I'll be on the next place home with my old guitar beside me,
I'm coming home from Nashville.
I'm coming home,
Mama I'm coming home.

Just for You
A delightful love song.

Just for You

Chorus
I'll climb mountains for you,
I'll swim rivers all for you,
Not for nothin', or for anyone else,
Just for you.

And there's the wishing well,
Where we made our dreams and
Where we made our love,
Its longer ago than it seems.
Lost in the maize of living
Time and tide would set us free,
Here we played the games of youth and honesty.

Chorus

And there's the trinket box,
Sitting there collecting dust,
And reminding me of the one I love,
Its longer ago than it seems.
Wouldn't trade it for gold or diamonds,
Some things money just can't buy,
On the inside the message reads
"Love you till I die".

Chorus

And there's the photograph,
Its always on display and
Sometimes I stop and notice,
Its longer ago than it seems.
We're sitting by our wishing well,
Must have been only just eighteen and
You've drawn me something in the sand,
Its longer ago than it seems.

If there was one moment left in time,
I would spend it all with you,
Not alone, or with anyone else,
Just with you.

Mockingbird
A deep song that seems to have a different meaning to every listener.

Mockingbird

Chorus
Come with me my dearest friend to kill the mockingbird.
Cross my heart and hope to die, I won't say a word.
When we see the tiny feathers flutter to the ground,
There'll be no sound.

Torn and twisted, he existed, fallen to the ground.
Shadow of his former self, lost within the crowd.
Catch and kill the mockingbird, his only hope and joy,
The poorest boy.

Chorus

Beyond temptation, resignation, joined the lost and found.
Only darkness in his tunnel, all he feels is cloud.
The mockingbird is trapped within his tired tortured mind,
So hard to find.

Chorus

Dark frustration, contemplation, who is winning now?
What doesn't kill will make you stronger, no one told him how.
The mockingbird is calling, singing 'who dares shall win',
Such a sin.

Chorus

Wings to Fly
Inspired by the Solo 1 Project, where Jamie Dunross, Sydney Paralympic Gold Medallist, planned to attempt a solo circumnavigation aboard his Sparkman & Stephens 34 foot sloop, Spirit of Rockingham. In 2010 Jamie became the first person with quadraplegia to circumnavigate Australia. When Jamie came home he retired from long ocean passages and now works with Sailability, providing sailing opportunities for people with a disability.

Wings to Fly

Chorus
Don't deny me wings to fly and do what I must do.
Don't deny me while I'm here the chance to see it through.
And if I leave you crying,
If I leave you asking why,
Please don't deny me wings to fly.

Deep in your heart you know that I can not stay home,
Try not to worry when you think of me alone.
You will see me frightened,
I don't live in fear,
Just move to the distant drum I hear.

Chorus

Although it may be difficult you need to let me go,
To further my life's journey and help myself to grow.
You will see me praying
Where does the will come from?
My restless spirit just drives me on.

Chorus

There will be times when it's encouragement I need,
And other times only your love to succeed.
You will see me struggle
And fight the ebbing tide,
I must go on or die inside.

Chorus

Cotton Fields
Another reflective song.

Cotton Fields

You ask me out to lunch,
If its all the same I'd rather be alone, then I agree.
You tell me your name,
But I don't remember what it was or how you came to be near me.
We walk the nearest cafe, the silence hurts my ears,
You begin to small talk but I'm not listening,
Just wishing I weren't here.

Chorus
In the cotton fields on a moon lit night by the river you will find me,
My thoughts are lost just my old guitar and the stars above to guide me.
If you're quiet you may hear me sing,
A song of love or anything,
In the cotton fields you will find me.

We order from the menu
"I'll take burger, coke and fries", "will that be all" she asks,
I nod and smile.
We find ourselves a table in the corner of the room,
Its dark and dingy, somewhere I can hide.
He begins to scratch the surface asking questions all the time,
Like where do you go and what do you like to do,
Why do you always ask so much.

Chorus

The hour passes slowly I try not to check the time,
Seconds count like minutes before its over.
"Let me pay the bill" but I always decline,
Don't want to owe you nothin', there won't be a next time.
Can't tell if you're a lonely heart or looking for a friend,
It doesn't really matter, I'm not here, I'm in the cotton fields again.

Chorus

Litigation Blues
This track has the strongest political message on the album. What is the constant ligitation over minor issues doing to our society?

Litigation Blues

Chorus
Can you see what you're doing? Can you feel the effect?
Is it mans inhumanity you are trying to perfect?
It's the children who will suffer and you who will explain,
When you reach the otherside why you did it, what you gained.

Can you remember growing up climbing trees?
We never thought of blame when we fell to our knees.
Respect, responsibility, we learnt how to live,
Until you came along trying to make a quick quid.

Chorus

And in case you hadn't noticed its O.K. to make mistakes.
There is enough pain and suffering without you on the take.
But you're too incensed to notice, to selfish to understand,
And everyone who's helped you has blood on their hands.

Chorus

You have stolen lifes adventure when all is said and done.
Your greedy intentions have affected everyone.
And don't try and tell me safety is your gift to give.
You've left us feeling lonely we are victims, too afraid to live.

Can you see what you'vedone? Can you feel the effect?
Is it mans inhumanity you've managed to perfect?
See the children who will suffer and you who will explain,
When you reach the otherside why you did it, what you gained.

Runaway
I deeply personal song inspired by a member of Jane's family

Runaway

Chorus
Where I'm living ain't no Hilton, Mama,
But I'm not right out on the street.
And I'm trying my damnedest to stay out of trouble, mama,
And sometimes I don't get enough to eat.
Not quite sure what it was that made me runaway from home.
Don't worry mama, you've done your best,
And I guess some day I'll find my way back home.

I thought of you on mothers day.
Were you waiting by the phone?
I longed to tell you "I'm OK,
But for now I must live alone."
As you know, I never called,
You would start to ask me why,
"O' why don't you come on back home".

Chorus

I've tried mending carts and I done spray painting,
Didn't last a day, it was too hard.
And my shirt and my shoes are looking worn,
But I cant go to the second hand store.
Probably don't make no sense to you
But buying old stuff ain't what we do,
No mama, that just ain't what we do.

Chorus

I'm not doing drugs and I'm not knickin' cars,
I know that won't get me far.
And I sleep all day and I'm up all night,
Hanging out round cafes and bars.
I share a small room with a kid named Joe,
He's someone you wouldn't want to know,
But then I guess I don't have friends you want to know.

Chorus

Another Night With You
As the title suggests this is an upbeat love song, jazz style.

Another Night With You

I know it's never easy to cry,
I know it's never easy to hide,
I feel another wonderful night with you.
I know when you are holding me tight,
I know everything is all right,
I feel another magical night with you

Chorus
Life is so uncertain, I told you right from the start,
Hold me a little closer, let me into your heart.

I know we'll go out Saturday night,
I know it will be love at first sight,
I feel another wonderful night with you.
I know whenever we're apart,
I know I'm always close to your heart,
I feel another magical night with you

Chorus

I know when there's a silvery moon,
I know I will be seeing you soon,
I feel another wonderful night with you.
I know under autumn skies,
I know there will be a surprise,
I feel another magical night with you

I know under autumn skies,
I know there will be a surprise,
I feel another magical night with you

My Town
Inspired by Janes home town and the feeling she had while living overseas.

My Town

One day late December
When I was far from home
I met with a stranger
We were lost and alone.
We talked about our families, the places we knew best
This land I love we all call the west.

Chorus
There is a land of wide open spaces
The sunset spreads for miles all around.
A land of opportunity and friendlier faces
Where you can dress up you can dress down.
Let me take you to my town.

Ride the waves at Yallingup
Whale sharks at Ningaloo.
Have a go and swim to Rotto
4 wheel drive Kalumbaru.
Dine on local crayfish and a glass of Chardonnay
It's all part of our West Australia way.

Chorus

Done fast moving places
Done two up two down.
Blue skies and sandy beaches
Are calling me home now.
And I won't be leaving this place I know the best
The land I love we all call the west.

Chorus

It's Alright
It's Alright sums up the rollercoaster ride of life and the album. You reach the stage where you finally realise it's OK to feel the way you do.

It's Alright

Chorus
I feel the way I do,
Because of what I have been through.
To get to where I am, and it's alright.
And as the years are passing by,
I forget the reasons why.
I got to where I am, and it's alright, it's alright.

Tired of making sense, of insignificant events.
Tired of making out I understand.
Give me a lonely beach,
Where I'm no longer within reach.
Give me time to count the grains of sand.

Chorus

Tired of stocks and shares, leaves us living in despair.
Tired of suffering the merciless greed.
Give me a quiet space,
Where I'm no longer out of place.
Give me friends who only take what they need.

Chorus

Tired of your control, it's eating at my soul.
Tired of waking up to stolen dreams.
Give me a different way,
Where I'm no longer watched each day.
Give me freedom to say what I mean.

Chorus
